The City of Heist-op-den-Berg (Flanders - Belgium) honours Mw Diane Verbist-Vandenwijngaerden for her 24 years of public service. Her painting (by Marika Bäumler) will be hung in the townhall.

Heist-op-den-Berg huldigt Mw Diane Verbist-Vandenwijngaerden voor haar 24 jaar lange burgemeesterschap. Het schilderij dat Marika Bäumler in opdracht maakte wordt hier onthuld en zal in de gemeenteraad gehangen worden.

Raku: Fire and Smoke

Raku originated in Japan in the late 16th century. The raku vessels were and still are used in the traditional tea ceremony. It's a low fire technique where the bisqued work is heated to a red hot temperature of 1000°C and then quickly taken out of the kiln and reduced in wood shaving, newspaper or a similar combustible material.

De Raku lage temperatuurtechniek (1000°C) ontstond in de late zestiende eeuw in Tokyo en word nog steeds gebruikt voor het vaatwerk in de traditionele theeceremonie. De plotse overgang van de oven naar de buitentemperatuur doet het glazuur barsten waarna tijdens het afkoelen de rook van o.a. houtsnippers voor verkleuring zorgt.

Taking a view from a distance

The bigger the sculpture the more distance one needs to have an overview. When you have a rather small studio it helps when you can go outside to have an overview. At this point the complete figure is not finished yet.

Hoe groter het beeld waaraan je werkt hoe meer afstand je nodig hebt om het totaal te overschouwen. Bij een klein atelier helpt het dus dat je naar buiten kan om er een goed zicht op te krijgen. Op dit moment is de volledige figuur nog in opbouw.

Drying is part of the process

While one final clay model is drying underneath a plastic another creation can be started. A slow drying process (sometimes more than two weeks, depending on the thickness of the clay) prevents the clay from cracking (the outside dries faster than the inside).

Terwijl een definitief kleimodel onder plastic staat te drogen kan een andere creatie opgestart worden. Dit trage droogproces (soms meer dan twee weken, afhankelijk van de kleidikte) voorkomt dat de klei barst (de buitenzijde droogt sneller dan de binnenzijde).
